Reno Firefighters Will Keep Their Jobs

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

ff-in-actionLate this evening, Reno firefighters worked a deal with the City of Reno to keep their jobs and have a freeze on two pay raises.

The deal comes against a backdrop of intense negotiations, after the city had served notices to the public safety officers that their jobs were on the line.

The Reno Gazette Journal carries the story this evening indicating that Brad Jensen, president of the local 731 International Association of Fire Fighters and Mayor Bob Cashell of the City of Reno brought the news to the relieve of several family members who had been troubled by the consequences of the layoffs.

Both sides had gone through a tough day of negotiations in which the senior management of the city met with family members of the firefighters. In the course of the day, there was no sign that the deal was going to go through, but it did.

We believe this is a good decision for everyone in the Biggest Little City in the World. It was a conciliatory deal. The public will be safer, the firefighters get to keep their jobs and the City of Reno gets to be able to control cost in a time of economic slow down.

Hail this deal. Hail public safety in our city. If you share this view with me, leave a comment on what you think about this development.

Emergency and Crisis Management Bloggers

Emergency and Crisis Management Bloggers

For the past one month, I have been checking out other emergency and crisis management blogs with the hope of identifying the most compelling ones that I can share with you. In the course of my search, I have found Eric Holder of Disaster Zone and Gerald Baron of Crisis Blogger to be my top two. Both men have compelling insights about crisis issues and and I consider them thought leaders. They are willing to challenge existing norms and chat courses that others dread to even think about.

Disaster Zone

Eric Holder is the principal at Eric Holderman and Associates. He specializes in building regional coalitions between agencies, government departments, the private sector and the non-profit organization. He also loves communication with respect to media and media relations.

What I admire most about Mr. Holderman is his foresight in the use of technology and technology applications in emergency management. When it comes to cutting ideas on how to integrate social media and technology in emergency management, I find his views ahead of the pack.

On his blog, he provides a comprehensive overview of other bloggers and thought leaders in areas like social media in disease control, crisis informatics, government and the use of media.

Crisis Blogger

Gerald Baron of Crisis Blogger is the CEO of Public Information Emergency Response (PIER), an organization that promotes the use of crisis communication technology. He is the author of “Now Is Too Late: Survival in an Era of Instant News.”

On his blog, he explores a wide range of issues ranging from banking crisis to terror, blogging, online fraud, social media and a myriad of other topics relating to crisis management. The fact that he started blogging as far back as 1996, says something about his commitment to the field.

It may also be fair to add that his blog is a mini-wikipedia of crisis management information sites. He has a comprehensive list of crisis sites and source including topics like: strategic communication, reputation management, public relations, media survival and more host both locally and internationally.

In the weeks ahead, I will highlight other bloggers that I admire and why I do so. If you have some compelling bloggers in the field of emergency management, please share with me and I will be happy to explore and share with you.
