UNR Starts Student Police Cadet Program

unrThe University of Nevada, Reno ‘s Police Department has started a program of using students as police cadets to beef up security and safety around campus. This is a very timely program given the recent cases of assault around UNR campus.

This fall, 15 students have joined the ranks of the program. They patrol the campus in teams, especially in areas around parking garages and facilities. Patrols start from 6pm to midnight from Sunday through Thursday.

The cadets patrol in golf carts and offer free rides to students in need. Sorry, you can take the ride home. Take the campus escort home. With this program, a student who studies late needs a ride to garage to his or her car or campus escort gets it.

The cadets work in teams of two to four and you can recognize them from the dark blue-type police jackets. In the last couple of weeks I have seen quite a good number of students getting this service.

This is a commendable program because it sends out a message to the students that the authorities care and are willing to do something about their safety and welfare in the aftermath of the recent incidents.

It is better to be safe than to be sorry!
